#3. Understanding Depression

Do you even know 5 signs of depression in your own life?

Sad to say, depression is one of the most common problems we have ever faced. In fact, some researchers believe depression is reaching epidemic levels in today’s society. About 5% of the population are medically diagnosed with depression in the USA.

These figures are probably similar to most of the western cultures.  The majority of all of people will experience some form of depression in their lifetime. Since you might find yourself in this ‘blue mood’ one day, won’t it be important to know the signs and symptoms of this illness?

Depression, anxiety and panic attacks particularly have become so prevalent that it’s exceedingly common for individuals to be taking medication for one or even both of these mood disorders. It has many causes and presents in many ways. The key symptom is the dulling or the flattened sense of mood.

Many believe the incidence of depression and anxiety has tripled since 1990 and more than twenty-five percent of the adult population in the U.S. suffers from one or more mood troubles.

If affects the home and all work environments and even shows up in those on holidays. Certainly those going through grief and loss cause much of this area of concern. #4. Understanding your Emotions

Our Emotions are usually one of the most misunderstood and most repressed members of our personality.  They are often maligned, feared, buried, stuck, confused and neglected.

——– > For Example: Can you identify 5 feelings you are aware of right now?

In most Western cultures, men are taught early to suppress and ignore the way they feel. While some would claim, women are given too much space to play on their and others emotions. Neither of these claims are true for all men or all women.

Our family of origin is often hot bed of unspoken feelings. Here is where we learn how to express the over whelming or distorted emotions. Our parents and other adults are the role models. However, did they express healthy communication? Like 99% of people during 99% of the time – probably not. Yet we learn how to identify and share our feelings by watching those around you.

Most people need help to really get in touch with their feelings. For many, it’s like learning a new skill!
Some emotional energy goes into being ‘passive yet aggressive’ when the pressure builds. Others just bury any and all feelings in case they get rejected.

Please know – Emotions are not the Enemy! Learning to identify and express any feeling in a balanced way is part of healthy emotional growth. It’s also part of good communication and, and, and ………. the list goes on.

The word “emotions” is not a Biblical term.  However, we find general principles, such as “mourn with those who mourn”, Romans 12:15, “be angry, but sin not”, Ephesians 4:26.

Scriptures like these tell us that Emotions are not to be quenched, but respected.  We are created in God’s image, and He has emotions too, so we must value them, because He does!

#6. Self-Talk? What that?

‘Mind Chatter’ is often just below the surface of our conscious thought. Sometimes, this chatter can be self-destructive, or it can be building good health. Sometimes, it’s a mater of catching the false and negative and rebuilding in the positive thoughts. The Bible called it ‘Renewing the Mind’.

Some of this internal dialogue is true … but most negative self-talk is false and distorted, often ruining the good mental health we all need. Remember what we think about life will influence our Emotions – which in turn will influence our behavior. If I think I am not worth other people’s time, how will I behave? If I think I am unattractive, how will I behave?

Although we all began this self-talk as children, it greatly shapes our world today. If I believe those – false – comments made by my neighbor about my size and face shape when I was 10 years old, those words can still echo into what I think of myself now. Parents, siblings and the views of peers are very important to children – but many of their comments were not true.

How do we overcome this self-rejecting and often self crippling inner voice? Can we be free to see ourselves the way our Creator made us to be? The answers are in this FREE Self-Talk? What is that?” eBook. Learn to catch the thinking – emotions – behavior cycles.
